Why uploads are often mislabeled
Search any streaming platform for “432 Hz” and you will find thousands of uploads claiming a specific tuning. Almost none of them have been verified. A tuning label is just text in a title or description — anyone can type it, no platform checks it, and once a wrong label exists it tends to spread. If the actual reference pitch matters to you, the label is the last thing you should trust.
What a tuning label is actually claiming
A song’s tuning is the A4 reference pitch its notes align to. When an upload says “432 Hz,” it is claiming that the track’s notes sit on a scale anchored to A4 = 432 Hz instead of the modern standard of 440 Hz. That is a measurable, falsifiable claim — the difference between 440 and 432 is about −32 cents, roughly a third of a semitone, and it shows up clearly in analysis even when it is subtle to the ear.
The problem is that nothing in the upload pipeline measures it. Titles, descriptions, and tags are free-form metadata. The four most common ways labels go wrong
Pitch shifting applied, title never updated
Many uploaders process a track — shifting it down to 432, or up toward a Solfeggio target — and then reuse the original title or forget to note the change. The reverse happens too: a title promises a retune that was never actually applied, or was applied to some tracks in a batch but not others.
Descriptions copied without measuring the source
Re-uploaders routinely copy titles and descriptions from whatever version they downloaded. If the source was mislabeled, the copy is mislabeled, and the new upload now lends the false claim extra apparent credibility because it appears in more places.
Playlists that mix reference tunings
A “432 Hz playlist” is only as accurate as its least-verified entry. Curators add tracks based on titles, not measurements, so playlists routinely mix genuine 432 material with standard 440 recordings and the occasional Solfeggio retune. Every listener who trusts the playlist inherits the mix.
Re-uploads of re-uploads
Errors compound. A 440 track gets labeled 432; someone downloads it, pitch-shifts it down 32 cents believing they are “correcting” a 440 source, and re-uploads it — now it really is off-standard, just not at the value anyone claims. After two or three generations, the label and the audio can be completely disconnected.
Why platforms don’t catch it
Streaming platforms validate copyright, format, and loudness — not reference pitch. There is no field in any major platform’s metadata schema for A4 reference, so tuning claims live entirely in free text. Automated systems that could detect tuning simply have no incentive to run: a mislabeled upload plays back fine, generates the same revenue, and triggers no complaints from the vast majority of listeners who never check.
